Photo 29 Feb 38 notes fuckyeahlatinamericanhistory: Dr. José Celso Barbosa (1857-1921) was the first US-trained medical doctor from Puerto Rico and is known as the father of the Puerto Rican statehood movement. An 1880 graduate of the University of Michigan medical school, Dr. Barbosa eventually returned to Puerto Rico, where he practiced medicine and became involved in the island’s politics. He founded the Puerto Rican Republican Party in 1899 after the island came under US rule at the end of the Spanish-American War. Dr. Barbosa was also appointed by US president William McKinley to the cabinet of one of the island’s governors and served in the Puerto Rican legislature. Today Puerto Rico observes the date of his birth, July 27, as a public holiday.
